Jewish history and the Land of Israel are inextricably intertwined: almost 4,000 years ago God promised Abraham to give the Land of Israel, or the Promised Land, to his descendants—the Jewish people. Since that time, Israel has remained an integral part of the Jewish experience. The Jewish people have either lived in and ruled over the Land, or dreamed from exile about returning to Israel and their holy capital city of Jerusalem.
In the thousands of years that have passed since God’s promise to Abraham, the Jewish people have endured indescribable suffering at the hands’ of their enemies—exiles, massacres, pogroms, violence and anti-Semitism of all kinds, and the Holocaust. Yet, in 1948, with the declaration of the State of Israel, the Jews’ return to sovereignty in their ancestral homeland became the modern day fulfillment of the promise God made to Abraham.
